My next stop on the toy highway is Nuremberg for the Spielwarenmesse toy show. It is my firm belief that anyone who is serious about the business of play must attend this event at least once; and preferably early in their career.
Here is why: It is the only way to grasp just how big, varied and magical the world of toys really is. Where else will you find 18 large building covers almost 2,000,000 square feet and exhibiting over 1 million unique toys? To give you an idea of just how big that is, the Javits Center covers a hefty 760,000 square feet.
The average American consumer thinks that the world of toys is what they see on the aisles of Wal-Mart. That selection is not just small in light of just how big the world of toys is but boring. What you see in Wal-Mart is what you see on TV. There is no magic, no mystique, just commodities.
So, when you can; attend this incredible event…and bring a good pair of shoes.
