What an amazing journey from the doll's perspective! It reminds me of a kindergarden project where my kids 'mailed' paper bodies of themselves to relatives far away. They were returned from the trip with a diary of what they did! It was great fun and a learning experience about new customs, landscapes and people.

My mother, Melanie Bonanza, was lending out book buddies (stuffed animals that were the main character in the book) at the elementary school library she ran in Hyde Park, New York 25+ years ago. She also had pets in the library that got checked out on vacations.

While this is not a new phenomenon I agree that the role of the library as giving access to commonly held goods is important. As is the fact that having a doll included with checking out the story or an animal with a reference number will increase the interest in the story/ information.
